What is Manuka Honey?

UMF Manuka HoneyManuka Honey is a form of mono-floral honey which is produced by bees that feed on the flowers that grow on the Manuka plant (also known as the tea tree or Leptospermum Scoparium) which is indigenous to New Zealand.  It has been discovered that Manuka Honey has extraordinary healing properties that are effective in treating a wide variety of health conditions, such as ulcers, strep throat, acid reflux, gastritis, IBS, wounds, burns, acne, eczema, ringworm, MRSA Staph infections, etc.

According to a number of reported studies, many types of honey contain low levels of hydrogen peroxide, enough to provide an antimicrobial effect without causing tissue damage. However, the hydrogen peroxide present in standard honey is rapidly decomposed into water and oxygen upon contact with catalase, which is an enzyme that is present in blood and wound fluid. This rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide makes the antimicrobial activity of ordinary honey short-lived. On the other hand, Manuka Honey has been found to show a stronger antimicrobial effect than other types of honey that is stable and maintains its healing properties even in the presence of catalase. Manuka Honey is also non-toxic to tissue, thereby giving it a distinct advantage over many other topical antiseptics.

What is UMF®?

Manuka HoneyUMF in an acronym for 'Unique Manuka Factor' which is the term given to the antibacterial property present in Active Manuka Honey. UMF is a floral property that comes from the nectar of Manuka flowers and has been found to posses extraordinary healing properties. This antibacterial activity is not present in any other type of honey.

Manuka Honey is tested and rated for its antibacterial potency. It is generally accepted that Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 or higher is appropriate for medical use. The higher the UMF rating, the higher the antibacterial activity.  Some reports have indicated that certain individuals can experience sensitivity to Manuka Honey with a high UMF rating (i.e 20-30).  Optimal UMF rating for therapeutic use is between 10-18.

Manuka Honey Products sold in the U.S. may not indicate a UMF rating or that it is an "active" ingredient.  Unfortunately, honey is not yet considered an FDA-recognized drug and therefore, U.S. manufacturers have limitations as to how they list Manuka Honey on their labels.  Check with the manufacturer to ensure the Manuka Honey used is medical grade.

UMF is a measuring system that rates the antibacterial potency of Manuka Honey. The UMF is determined by comparing the antibacterial activity of a given honey with the antibacterial activity of antiseptic phenol (carbolic) using a standard lab test. For example, a UMF rating of 10 is equivalent to the potency of a 10% solution of phenol.

The term "UMF" is a registered trademark of the Active Manuka Honey Association in New Zealand.
